Prof. ANAGNOSTOPOULOS STAVROS A.

Born: 1946

POSITION
Professor and Head of the Structures Division in the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Patras, where he teaches earthquake engineering courses.

EDUCATION
A graduate of the National Technical University of Athens (1968), he also holds the S.M, C.E. and Sc.D. degrees in Civil Engineering from the Massachusetts Inst. of Technology (1970, 1971, 1972).

ACADEMIC/PROFESSIONAL HISTORY
Before joining to the University of Patras in 1986, he has worked as Post-Doctoral Research Associate at MIT (1975-1976), Senior Research Engineer, Shell Development Co., Houston (1976-1981) and General Director, Institute of Engineering Seismology & Earthquake Engineering, Thessaloniki, Greece (1981-1986).

OTHER RELEVANT ACTIVITIES
In addition to his teaching and research, he has been active in earthquake related activities in Greece and in the European Union. He has served as: Chairman, Greek State Agency for Seismic Protection, Greek National representative to the EU for Civil Protection, National representative to the Council of Europe for major natural and technological disasters, Greek National representative to the EU for the COPERNICUS program, Member of the European and Greek panels that drafted Eurocode 8 (Part 4: “Silos, tanks and pipelines” and 6: “Towers, masts and chimneys”, and the new Greek code for earthquake resistant design. Member, Greek National Committee for earthquake prediction, seismic risk and protection. Invited expert on many occasions by the European Commission. He has been a proposal reviewer for the Greek R&D Gen. Secretariat, for the European Commission and for the US National Science Foundation. He is also a paper reviewer for several international technical journals.

RESEARCH INTERESTS
His current research interests include the inelastic seismic torsional response, base isolation and assessment of building earthquake safety. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics.

Has published extensively on problems of earthquake engineering, offshore structures and seismic risk mitigation and has done consulting work for various public and private companies on major projects. Selected publications:
