Summary of Direct Methods for Solving Discrete Systems. Basic Concepts in Variational Formulation of Boundary-value Problems. Ritz and Galerkin direct methods. Weak formulation of general boundary value problems. Finite element formulation of second and fourth-order boundary value problems. Applications to solid mechanics problems. Extension of the formulations to higher dimensional problems: elasticity problems. Isoparametric elements and numerical integration. Implementation of general purpose finite element computer programs.
