Unique features of SSI in the framework of earthquake engineering and foundation vibrations: Period and damping shift, modification of ground excitation, re-distribution of internal forces. Static and stiffness of surface footings: spring-dashpot analogs, material and radiation damping. Dynamics of simple oscillators with SSI: comparison with experimental data. Analysis of dynamic pile response: effective pile length, Winkler modeling, kinematic effects. Dynamics of pile groups: superposition schemes. Case studies: Mexico City (1985), Kobe (1995). Dynamics of retaining structures: limit analysis versus wave solutions. Design considerations: seismic regulations, special design spectra for SSI applications.
