This basic seismology course  is a physics based course, which covers the breadth of traditional seismology, developed from the seismic wave equation, and the physics of the earthquake source. The course aims to provide an understanding of the dynamics of the solid Earth from theoretical and observational seismology and seismotectonics in relation to earthquake hazard and mitigation. The course covers the following topics:

  • Earth structure, plate tectonics
  • Seismic waves and phases (vibratory motion, fundamental theorems of elastodynamics, wave propagation, attenuation of waves)
  • Seismographs and seismograms (principle of seismometry, frequency and dynamic range of seismic signal, field work to install a seismometer)
  • Earthquakes seen as a point source (earthquake location, elastodynamic of a point source, focal mechanism, magnitudes)
  • Earthquakes seen as finite sources (fault rupture and elastic rebound, Haskell model, directivity, earthquake spectrum, magnitude saturation)
  • Earthquakes sequences and probabilities
  • Ground‐motion prédiction for seismic hazard response spectrum and basic ground‐motion prediction équations)
  • Case studies
